Carlos Gamez de Francisco

Artist Statement

I was born in Holguin, Cuba in 1987. I attended one of the best fine arts schools, Raul Gomez Garcia, for three years. Then I attended a visual arts school, Jose Marti, for two years. I subsequently studied privately. I now live in Louisville, Kentucky where I have exhibited often.

Due to my formal training by master painter and Cuban artist Cosme Proenza, I have a comprehensive knowledge of visual arts, dance, music, wardrobe, as well as performance arts. All of these disciplines have helped define me as an artist, contributing largely to my vision.

As an artist, my concept is fundamentally the representation of enigmatic characters that create conflicts and complex situations in human beings' lives. I am not only recreating interpersonal relations. I am also representing social and historical issues which affect humans' reactions because of their social, economic, geographic, and political environment.

In my work, the background-figure relationship is crucial. Inspired by the rules of the Renaissance portrait and traditional Asian painting, I focus on complex character relationships where the simple background acts as an echo of their inner universe.

My interests are broad. They revolve around stereotypical human behavior that arouses in me an almost morbid curiosity. My figures, which seem to escape the laws of reason and of physics, are human alter egos. Usually friendly egos, however, ultimately monsters in the end. I try to demystify the reality around me through my work.
