Rachael McCampbell
Rachael McCampbell’s canvases are rich with texture, mythical (often allegorical) content and emotion. Having grown up on a farm in Tennessee, her work is often nature-based—exploring themes of running horses, birds in flight or landscapes. Her years working and studying in Florence, Italy, London, New York City and Los Angeles influenced her more classical approach to painting. She is collected both nationally and internationally. “My imagery emerges more from a subconscious place than a conscious one. I draw upon fragments of dreams, meditations or journal entries. I work in layers, creating textures, adding and subtracting paint until the story I am trying to tell or sensation I am trying to convey emerges. I take an emotive, action-based approach to the application of paint, working as much with splashes and drips of color as with carefully rendered line. I then go back in and scrape, scratch through or sand away several layers to reveal an original, even unanticipated thought or feeling beneath. As I like to show the ‘artist's hand,’ I often work backwards, drawing on top of a finished painting and exposing the line work that provided the painting’s original armature.” Rachael paints in both her studios in Los Angeles, California and Leiper’s Fork, Tennessee.
