Jane Braddock

Artist Statement

The Shakti Series: Shakti is Sanskrit for the divine, female force of creation. I began the Shakti Series in 1996 after a trip to Tibet, Nepal and India. The essence of the work is light and pattern. The paintings are built of layers of color which create a visual and energetic harmonic similar to a musical chord. The actual mark making is highly spontaneous and energetic but curiously, as the layers build, often results in a feeling of meditative suspension.

For many years I have been naming these paintings with fragments of text- usually from poets such as Neruda, Rumi, Hafiz and [Dylan] Thomas. I extract a few words that exclude content or narrative but suggest visceral experience. This open-ended experiential quality of the titles reflects the work and allows the viewer interpretive freedom within the aesthetic dialogue.

The Text Series: Now that the text has both inspired and 'spoken', my work is emerging as an integral part of the written content itself. Structured by a grid format, the letterforms also contribute as another layer of patterning within the painting. This formal, abstract arrangement of letters is emphasized by running the words together- thus adding a cryptic quality to the piece as the content is not easily discerned. It is important to me that the text first be perceived as part of a painting and not merely superimposed intellectual material.

The content however matters! Culled from various sources and spanning many cultures, the text fragments express underlying values which are collective. That collective experience refers to Oneness at the heart of all faith traditions- a compelling aspiration as well as a beacon. As the spiritual and scientific evolve to reveal their common ground, we witness the paradigm of life deepening and expanding into its own whole. Like the DNA symbol itself- turning and twisting within and without- life slowly, through eons, becomes aware of itself. We arrive at the great mystery- of being both created and creator. The microcosm of this is art making itself.

Bio

Braddock has a BFA from Syracuse University. After a stint of 16 years in NY designing and coloring fabrics for the decorative trade, she moved to Nashville to pursue a full time career as a painter. Though she has traveled widely, the places and cultures that have most informed her work are Asian- from India to Japan.

Her abstract paintings, based on a grid format, explore pattern and color. She considers these to be fundamental expressions of light. Like light, their juxtaposition creates vibration or energy, which is one of the original expressions of creation itself.

Many of her current pieces include text culled from various sources spanning over 1000 years. These range from Du Fu, an ancient Chinese poet, to Muktananda, an esteemed holy man, to John Prine, singer songwriter. These in one way or another reflect her spiritual journey, which she considers the essence of her life and work.
