TINNEY is proud to present Shell Game, a two-person exhibition featuring works by Hannah Rose Dumes and Paloma Wall. The exhibition will be on display from February 21 through April 4, 2026. The opening reception will be Saturday, February 21, from 6 to 9 PM, followed by an additional reception in conjunction with the Second Saturday Art Crawl on March 14 from 6 to 9 PM.

Hannah Rose Dumes’ abstract oil paintings feature an ecstatic use of intense hues, each piece its own celebration of color, a carnival of intersecting shapes and vibrational color relationships. Dumes paints in oil on top of a foundational layer of acrylic washes. It’s an open and exploratory process that embraces personal symbolism and ambiguity. The forms are familiar, bearing subtle reference to the body or to nature, but remain implacable. Dumes’ universal, unassuming set of symbols—flowers, spirals, eggs, shells, breasts, suns—melt into one another like overripe produce on an impossibly hot summer afternoon. The works elicit a giddy sort of headrush, like bees drawn to flowers, color-drunk.

Paloma Wall’s totemic ceramic vessels are bent, pierced, horned; some even seem to weep large ceramic tears, like surrealist memorial urns. Form and function seem to wrestle for prominence in Wall’s expertly hand-crafted works, which sprout appendages from their alien-like abdomens, some of which sport large cavities where the stems of flowers might rest in a more traditional vase. It’s as if the vessels have adapted like plants over millennia to survive in their unique environments: with camouflage, vestigial limbs, predator-deterring thorns, and bright poison-warning coloration. This sense of animism, deftly imbued in such a delicate medium, is the magic of Wall’s works.

In these intermingled bodies of work, some immediate meaning lies hidden; concealment emerges as a method of preservation. The personal is abstracted, a form of encryption—ambiguity as defense. Like a shell game, odds are one-in-three, place your bets! Eye on the ball, watch closely! But the game is rigged, and the ball, spirited away by sleight-of-hand, is nowhere to be found.

Tinney Contemporary is proud to present A Brief Pause Between Two Mysteries, a solo exhibition featuring new paintings by local artist Wendy Walker Silverman. Silverman’s paintings feature hard-edge forms that shift and tessellate across the surface of the canvas. The artist repeats, reflects, and transforms shapes in dynamic compositions that reference architecture and environment. This process is guided by intuition, an exploratory approach to abstraction inextricable from the artist’s personal meditative practice. Through this carefully-ordered geometry, traces of the artist’s hand remain by virtue of her fluid, responsive approach to composition.

Carried out in her own always-evolving color palette, the forms seem to vibrate by virtue of an Albersian color interaction. By exploiting various acrylic mediums and varied opacities, Silverman further complicates these color relations through transparent top layers which allow the history of paint to shine through. This pentimento deepens the shifting composition and color interaction, yielding an inviting sense of depth—distinct from the flatness that is emphasized in much geometric painting. 

This dynamism invites the viewer to play at pareidolia. What do you see? Vague impressions at first—but the longer you look, things begin to take shape: structures, landscapes, figures. TINNEY celebrates its twentieth year by showcasing an expansive group exhibition, kicking off its 2026 program. The exhibition will be on display from January 10 through February 14, 2026. The opening reception will be on Saturday, January 10,&#38;nbsp; from 2 to 9 PM in conjunction with the Downtown Arts District’s&#38;nbsp; Second Saturday Art Crawl. There will be a public closing reception on February 14, 2026.

TINNEY/20 features the works of over 50 painters, sculptors, and photographers living and working in Tennessee who have exhibited works with the gallery, in its various incarnations, over the past two decades. The exhibition will be a moment to reflect on the gallery’s enduring legacy as a reliable institution whose voice has helped define the vibrant visual arts community in Nashville. 
TINNEY&#38;nbsp; has occupied its current space since 2006, when Susan Tinney sought a permanent location for her habitual pop-up exhibitions, which had hitherto taken place in her living room and in friends' homes. Since then, an engaged coterie of makers, collectors enthusiasts have propagated in and around the gallery. This “recollection” is a celebration of the joys of making and sharing work, of survival, and of what we continue to cultivate together.

Space Scape showcases Olivia’s interdisciplinary works in collage, assemblage, painting and installation, engaging multiple archives of historically marginalized communities. Her luminous processes explore modalities of retreat, resistance, rebellion and liberation. She employs distinct multilayered collage strategies by mining records, remixing archival documents and manila folders into quilt-like works with flowing forms that transgress the rigid structure of the file folder. Displayed alongside the collage works, Olivia’s vivid, multilayered “nu-fresco” paintings grapple with memory and history by excavating cumulative layers of image, disrupting pictorial space by carving away plaster. 
Both methods visually consider the complexities of identity, place-keeping and record-keeping; challenging systems of forced categorization, disrupting attempted erasure, and prioritizing restoration. The works have a transcendental bent—the artist literally cuts portals into her material containers, rupturing the picture plane, unveiling networks of data and imagery—leading the viewer beyond the frame: out of facile, reductive categories and into an engagement with history, with the cosmos, and with their own place in it. Space Scape is a record of this act of remembering, of strategizing, of improvisation, ingenuity and futurity.

Tinney Contemporary is proud to present Hatchback Tetris, a solo exhibition featuring new works by Joey Slaughter. The show runs from Saturday, August 23 through September 27, 2025. The opening reception will be on Saturday, September 13,&#38;nbsp; from 2 to 9 PM.

Joey Slaughter’s wall-mounted works materialize the immaterial, translating ephemeral phenomena into physical form. Constructed from brightly painted, CNC-cut MDF components pieced together in interlocking arrangements, these assemblages oscillate between playful exuberance and meticulous control.

The title of the exhibition correlates to a distinct image—one familiar to all cross-country road-trippers, to art handlers, to minivan-touring-bands, and a slew of other various road dogs with a habit of packing too much cargo into their imminently practical, affordable-yet-stylish, mid-size SUVs.

In this body of work, Slaughter incorporates found materials like car mats, as well as painted grids that reveal the artist’s hand in contrast to the perfect, machine-cut curves of the MDF. Their chromatic intensity and compositional dynamism echo the design philosophy of the Memphis Group, while their abstract forms are reminiscent of graffiti and street art. 

Central to Slaughter’s practice is an inquiry into processes of communication, translation, and transmission—the way information is transformed as it moves across systems. His works operate analogously to a waveform rendering sound visible, or to the synesthetic perception of music as color. In this sense, the works stage a negotiation between perception and materiality, opening up a space where the abstract and the embodied converge.

Tinney Contemporary is proud to present Let’s Go Swimming, a summertime group exhibition, blending the extraordinary talents of Sophia Belkin, Megan Greene, Esther Ruiz, Elise Thompson, and Yanira Vissepó. The show runs from Saturday, July 5 through August 16, 2025. The opening reception will be on Saturday, July 12, 2025 from 2 to 9 p.

It’s as if the long, hot summer of the southern gothics somehow manifests its own antidote, an oasis as reprieve from the heat. Picture the swimming hole of your youth.  Barefoot, clambering up worn roots of the bur oaks on the banks, carefully avoiding shattered Miller bottles and cigarette butts, up to the highest ledge. A place of inversion: the surface mirrors the sky, the branches overhead—suddenly, the illusion is shattered by the front-flip bravado of high divers, the occasional riotous bellyflop. Weightless in free-fall, violently breaking the surface, weightless again in the brisk water. Breathless, nose plugged, cheeks puffed, peering up at the surface from among the reeds. Nowhere else can hold this commingling of  sanctuary and transgression—bildungsroman baptismal, the smell of dark and damp earth, dirt-weed psychedelia. Hallucinatory sun-poisoning, cool mud and water remedy—everything shimmering in heat waves, ultraviolet and super-saturated. 

The works in the exhibition investigate organic forms and imagined environments through various modes of abstraction. Pools and plants, waves and wells, stones and splashes are revealed through each artists’ expressive mark-making, acute attention to detail, and innovative use of materials. Collectively, the works accomplish a sort of thaumaturgy, evoking an impossible landscape, a mirage that doesn’t dissipate as you draw closer.

A second reception will be held on June 14&#38;nbsp; in conjunction with the DADA (Downtown Arts District Alliance)&#38;nbsp; Second Saturday Art Crawl.

DARK BIG BANG draws its title from the leading quantum theory on the origin of dark matter in the universe: a separate, second big bang that unleashed all the unseen and immeasurable dark energy comprising the majority of the known universe. Russell draws a parallel between this cosmological phenomenon and the root traumas experienced along our own human timelines—events that affect our everyday existence, yet are often difficult to pinpoint. These moments can stem from ancestral trauma passed down generationally, childhood trauma, past experiences of death and illness, as well as moments of "root joy," which shape how we move through life.

Mapping his own intergenerational history led Russell to uncover his Choctaw family’s involvement in the devastating and genocidal Trail of Tears, ending in the artist’s home state of Oklahoma; his family’s land allotment under the liquidation of communally-held tribal lands into privately owned properties; and his grandmother and great-grandmother’s forced attendance at a Catholic Indian Boarding School near his hometown. The latter was an instrumental tool in the erasure of Indigenous culture and the loss of generational knowledge in his family—and Indigenous families across Turtle Island (a term for North and Central America used by many Indigenous peoples).

The work in DARK BIG BANG finds Russell re-contextualizing traditional Choctaw crafts such as basket weaving, pottery, beadwork, and embroidery—crafts that use natural elements to create art through pattern and repetition. Embracing these diverse materials and practices, the artist constructs three-dimensional sculptural objects and environments, which he photographs to create lens-based "drawings." Russell utilizes&#38;nbsp; in-camera effects to create lens-based works rooted in sculpture, performance, and process. His multidisciplinary practice defies neat categorization within the traditional boundaries of photography.

Russell’s varied approach and materials speak to his own complex history as a queer rural artist raised on the Chickasaw reservation, now a widower and AIDS survivor. This Venn diagram of identities and histories is mirrored in geometric goddess figures constructed from lighting gels commonly used in gay bars and nightlife culture; multi-panel pieces featuring his HIV medication photographed on velvet, reading more like embroidery than photography; kaleidoscopic sets made of mirrors and roses whose logistics are impossible to discern; and blocks of bulletproof acrylic floating in space. 

DARK BIG BANG is both a meditation on trauma and a celebration of the joy that can arise from our shared human experience. Through this innovative body of work, Benjy Russell invites viewers to embark on a journey of reflection, healing, and hope—a journey from darkness into a reimagined future.
