KJ Schumacher
Rinna
Tinney Contemporary is pleased to present RINNA, a body of work by K.J. Schumacher.
Schumacher’s work is about mark-making and the studio process. An obsessive collector of his own studio detritus, Schumacher’s collections yield much of the source material for his work. Recent circumstances of self isolation and social distancing presented an opportunity to look back further, deeper into the collections. The artist’s philosophy that mark-making occupies an intrinsic significance in human experience informs the emotive nature of his reusing past marks.
These markings record moments, chapters, and themes in life–and in shared lives. Rinna, a childhood nickname for the artist’s wife, emerged as a metaphor for reflecting on the past.

Accident and intention often compete in Schumacher’s work. This exhibition embraces a distilled aesthetic, one in which chance and randomness are modifiers to the artist’s purposeful, gestural strokes. These starkly divided compositions represent episodes, memories, and movements in the artist’s personal, professional, and domestic life.
Schumacher’s practice depends upon the collection and preservation of studio remnants, elaborating on the studio process by way of a generative methodology of chance-based selections. These works build upon the belief that the physical mark holds intrinsic importance within human experience.
