Cletus Wilcox
J. Cletus Wilcox is a practicing artist based in Louisville, Kentucky. Their work explores the
intersections of process, color, and queer experience, using painting as both a visual language and a method of inquiry. Rather than treating painting as a means to a predetermined image, Wilcox approaches the act of making as an unfolding conversation—one where intuition, material, and repetition become collaborators.
Process is central to the work. Layers of color, gesture, and mark-making accumulate over time, creating compositions that reflect both deliberate choices and moments of discovery. This emphasis on process mirrors an internal journey of self-exploration, where the external act of painting becomes inseparable from the ongoing work of understanding identity, memory, and transformation.
Queer subject matter informs the practice not only through representation but also through an embrace of fluidity, vulnerability, and becoming. Wilcox’s paintings occupy a space where personal experience expands into broader questions about perception, belonging, and the ways we construct ourselves through both visibility and concealment.
Ultimately, the studio functions as a site of reflection and possibility—a place where color and process become tools for navigating the complex relationship between the inner self and the outward world. Through painting, Wilcox invites viewers to consider the transformative potential of sustained attention, material engagement, and the continual act of becoming.
