Jeanie Gooden

“ I make a conscious effort to maintain the idea that fear has no place in my creative process. The joy I have in making art is captured within the moments of completion and release, when the canvas becomes a painting and when a person connects with what they see. ”

Jeanie Gooden is an American artist who lives and works between Mexico and the U.S.  For the past decade, most of her paintings have been created in San Miguel de Allende, a city known for its history as a creative home for artists from all over the world.  Her non-representative mixed-media paintings are thickly-layered and texturized with paint, fabric, charcoal, and found materials.

Gooden is drawn to “the challenge of creating a surface that is integrated but in unity”.  Her abstractions often include gestures that resemble handwriting, using the movement of the body while painting to channel energy into her works and embed an abstracted voice. Gooden places a high value on the viewer’s response to each painting, cherishing the richness of communication allowed by painting; emotion and experience conveyed by way of surface, texture, and color, distinctly outside of the rigid bounds of language.

Jeanie Gooden has exhibited nationally and internationally, with her work in public and private collections from Mexico to California, Arizona, Texas, Nashville, and beyond.
