Wendy Walker Silverman | A brief pause between two mysteries
Tinney Contemporary is pleased to present Drinking Tears, a solo exhibition by Kimia Ferdowsi Kline, on view from June 20 to July 6. The exhibition will take place between 4th Avenue and Rep. John Lewis Way N. in the newly-renovated Historic Nashville Arcade, celebrating the introduction of the Arcade Arts Program. The opening reception will be held on Thursday, June 20, from 5 to 8 PM.
Kline’s work has a mythological weight to it, reading as both protean and primal. Vibrant, abstracted figures rendered in mixed media contort and intertwine on papyrus and wood, yielding a beautiful and uncanny sense of interconnectedness. The works are sculptural and confrontational; expertly and intentionally crafted, yet gritty and primordial. The themes of Kline’s work feel as anthropological as the materials: papyrus and wood, which seem to bear the textures of their own histories (like bodies themselves).
Drinking Tears connotes loss and mourning, an act of intimacy or of self-effacement. As it relates to Kline’s work, there’s a sense of alienation matched with connection and attachment that emerges—particularly with relation to the societal and familial expectations placed on women, on women’s bodies, on mothers and daughters. The figures Kline depicts are engaged in an ancient dance, one that tempers strength with vulnerability as Self and Other blur.
